How do I know I am ready to start therapy?

Deciding to begin therapy is a significant decision - because the prospect of starting counselling, trusting a stranger and being vulnerable can be daunting.

It’s something you might have been thinking about for some time, or something that occurred to you and now you can’ t shake the sense that it feels right.

So are there “signs” that can help you decide if you are ready to start counselling? Some of them may be…

  • You’ve noticed something does not feel right - This could be a feeling, a pattern of behaviour, a relationship in your life.

  • You feel “stuck” or find yourself thinking about similar issues again and again - You find yourself ruminating on the same problems over again, or you keep talking to friends and family about it, without it ever feeling resolved.

  • You’ve experienced a major life change - You might’ve experienced a big transition, loss, or life change and are finding it difficult to cope with it.

  • You keep thinking about starting therapy, despite feeling scared and uncertain - Despite your reservations, it’s something you keep thinking about and coming back to.

You might resonate with one or more of these signs, or feel that none of these represent how you’re feeling. Does that mean counselling is not the right step for you? No - because you don't need to be in a crises, or feel ‘broken’ or experience a major life event to take that next step towards starting counselling. You just need to feel ready.

And I’d say…if you’re thinking about coming to counselling, and wondering what it will be like, then you’re ready to begin.

I offer a free 15-minute chat to help you figure out if we’re a right fit and if you’d like to begin counselling with me - with no commitment. Why don’t you take the first step and start there?
